Alien Vs Predator; Q1 2010

Developed at Rebellion by the team responsible for the original 1999 PC classic, the all-new Aliens vs. Predator allows players to take the role of three infamous species: Colonial Marines, Predators and Aliens. The game will feature a unique three-way online multiplayer experience, allowing gamers to battle for survival and the right to be crowned the deadliest species in the galaxy. Each race will also have its own distinct action-packed single-player campaign mode, with a storyline that cleverly interweaves with the other two species’ paths.

Set on planet BG-386; a human colonist mining group discovers an ancient pyramid containing a dark and horrible secret. Across the galaxy, a race of warriors is alerted to the discovery of their pyramid and a hunting party is dispatched to ensure that it remains sealed at all costs. Deep inside the ruined pyramid meanwhile, nature’s deadliest species awakes from centuries of hibernation intent on finding new prey.

The Colonial Marine’s story is an incredible fight against all odds from horrors lurking in the dark. Surrounded on all sides yet armed to the teeth, the Colonial Marine represents humanity’s last stand with the firepower to fight back.

As the Alien, players will discover what it’s like to be the scariest, most murderous creature in the universe, with the ability to traverse any surface at lightning speed in order to get close enough to unleash its deadly claws, tail and teeth.

A master of the hunt, the Predator grants the player an arsenal of exotic weaponry with which to stalk from the shadows. Earn the greatest honor by ambushing prey up-close, before butchering them for a gory trophy kill.
Green represents general features. Orange represents online Xbox Live specific features.

players will be able to play as either the Alien, Predator or Marine (just like in the original games). And as in the former games each species has its own unique abilities.

The game will also feature not only a distinct story-driven single-player campaign for each of the three species, but also a unique 3-way online multiplayer mode, which allows gamers to pit the three species against each other in the ultimate battle for survival and for the right to be crowned the deadliest species.

While Sega may still be expecting delays with a Q1 2010 release period set for Rebellion's long expected next AVP title. Retailers
have already announced Aliens vs Predator 3's release date falls on January 19th, 2010, for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Multiplayer Hands-on
This latest AvP reminds me more of the 2001 PC title, Aliens versus Predator 2 that was developed by Monolith, but was a sequel to another AvP game, different from the Atari Jaguar one, also developed by Rebellion. In that game, you could play as one of the three factions – Aliens, Predators or Space Marines – each with its own unique weapons and abilities. It was almost like three distinct shooters in one, wrapped into a single package.

The multiplayer mode for the latest title Aliens vs. Predator sticks to this same concept; each of the three player types is completely unique, not just copies of each other with different weapons. The Alien doesn’t even have any weapons, outside of his own body parts. The Predator has his weird outer space weapons, and the space marines have their own futuristic versions of current earthbound military technology. But kill abilities are only the beginning of the ways the three are different.

The Alien is a melee only class, tearing enemies apart with his claws and tail strikes. To compensate for his need to get up close for the kill, the Alien moves incredibly fast and on any surface he wants to; walls, ceilings, etc. He’s like Lionel Richie with acid blood. The Alien can also see very well in the dark, so lurking in a dark corner and waiting for prey to come by is usually the best strategy, even in fast-paced multiplayer matches. The Alien can also pull off some wicked stealth kills that can be modified into “trophy kills”, where he removes a part of his enemy’s body with his little mouth that’s inside the bigger mouth.

Keeping with the canon of its universe, the Predator’s biggest advantage is his ability to cloak himself. As long as he doesn’t turn on his targeting system, he’ll remain almost completely invisible. The Predator has a pretty amazing melee attack as well, and can pull off even better trophy kills by ripping the entire spine/skull assembly out of a human being. He can jump high to different perches and use one of four powerful weapons (plasma caster, wrist blades, mines and smart disc) that he targets with his laser sight.

The space marines are your more traditional type, and play like pretty much any other shooter. In the multiplayer modes we got our hands on, we got to use a battle rifle, a shotgun, grenades and a machine pistol. The marines can’t cloak or walk on the ceiling, but they do have motion detecting radar.

The relative abilities of these three units illustrates the first potentially major problem with the game: balance. Marines are mostly helpless against the faster and more capable Aliens and Predators. They must stick together for any hope of survival, but in basic deathmatch mode, you’d be a fool to try and fight as a Space Marine. They are completely overmatched.

So you can cloak, don’t get an attitude about it.

The two multiplayer modes we played at SEGA’s offices (outside of regular old deathmatch), were clearly designed with this disparity in mind. Infestation mode is sort of a “last man standing” type of game, where everyone in the match expect one player is a marine. That other player is an Alien, and each marine they manage to kill then respawns as another Alien. The object here is to stay alaive as the odds keep mounting against you and the Alien horde descends upon your dwindling human numbers.

Predator Hunt was the other mode we played, and it begins the same way: everyone but one player is a Space Marine, and the odd man out begins the game as a Predator. The Predator must stay alive and keep killing Space Marines to stay the Predator, but if he gets killed, the player who offed him then becomes the predator himself. It’s a big deadly game of tag. Both of these modes seem to prove the point that a single marine versus a single Alien or Predator is a fundamentally unfair match.

There were some other problems with what we played, though it’s important for us to withhold judgment until we see the actual final finished product. What we played might have been really rough in the framerate department, but that’s often cleared up after a game has spent more time in development. They do have until 2010 to get that straightened out. But everything else about the graphics seemed really bland and retrograde, not the kind of thing that current generation hardware like the stuff inside PS3’s and Xbox 360’s is capable of. I can’t imagine that the team has placeholder graphics in place at this point in development, but I really kind of hope that they do.

Aliens vs. Predator has a long ways to go development-wise, but plenty of time to do it. We’re really looking forward to seeing it in a couple of months to see what kind of progress has been made, because at this point it seems like there’s a ton of room for improvement. The AvP universe is one that lends itself perfectly to video games, so a bad game would be a huge disappointment. We’re hoping Rebellion uses the time they have left to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Ok now, Smile... Wider

No fkin chance im playin as the Marines on Multiplayer as even tho they'll have some meaty weaopns, they'll be Seriously under-classed against both the Preds n Aliens..
I know the single player of the Marines will be like that, but it'll be Ai controllin the Preds/Aliens.. so it won't be so bad lol
